From November 26th to 27th, the 2022 Tsinghua Maker Day series of activities was held both online and offline. Representatives of Tsinghua teams that won awards in various scientific and technological innovation competitions, teacher and student representatives of Tsinghua’s creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship platforms and student associations, scholars from many domestic and foreign universities, and well-known makers and maker educators from all sectors of society participated in the activities. The online synchronous live broadcast had over 120,000 views.

Ouyang Zheng deliver an online speech
Ouyang Zheng, vice provost and dean of the Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua, said in his speech that Tsinghua Maker Day has become an innovation and entrepreneurship education event with great influence and characteristics of both China and Tsinghua. In the past year, the school was selected as one of the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice bases. In the final of the 8th China International “Internet+” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, it achieved a double breakthrough with the highest number of gold awards in history and a gold award in the Red Tourism Track. It also supported the China-US Youth Maker Competition hosted by the Ministry of Education and won the special prize in the final. The Tsinghua Maker Day series of activities not only showcases the excellent achievements of the school’s deepening of innovation and entrepreneurship education reform but also provides support for promoting the systematic integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education into the student talent cultivation system and also provides a reference plan for Tsinghua's various double-creation platforms to explore normalized and sustainable education paths. In the future, Tsinghua University will deeply analyze the new situations and challenges faced by current education, adhere to the “trinity” education concept, further promote high-level innovation and entrepreneurship education integrating triple-creation, and solidly promote the high-quality development of double-creation education.

During the opening ceremony, the award ceremony of the 8th China International “Internet+” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the 2022 China-US Youth Maker Competition - Tsinghua University was held. Liu Pei, the coordinator of innovation and entrepreneurship education and the deputy dean of the Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua University, read and presented congratulatory letters to Qiu Yiyun (a dual-master student of Grade 2021 in Design - Technological Innovation of the School of Fine Arts and the University of Washington), Gao Mingyue (a postgraduate student of Grade 2020 of the School of Fine Arts), representatives of the Cosmic Music Box project, Lin Tengyu (a postgraduate student of Grade 2018 of the Department of Mechanical Engineering), the representative of the Hongrun Qingyuan project, and Liu Yifeng (a postgraduate student of Grade of 2018 of the School of Integrated Circuits), the representative of the Eight Degrees of Sunshine project. In the 8th China International “Internet+” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the Eight Degrees of Sunshine, Hongrun Qingyuan, and Cosmic Music Box teams won gold awards, and the Cosmic Music Box team also won the special prize in the 2022 China-US Youth Maker Competition.

Li Shuangshou, the director of the Tsinghua University Fundamental Industrial Training Center, the representative of Grade 1986 alumni, and the executive director of the “Tsinghua Craftsman” Competition Organizing Committee, reviewed the situation of the first “Tsinghua Craftsman” Competition and announced the official launch of the second “Tsinghua Craftsman” Competition. Li Shuangshou said that maker education is committed to cultivating innovative workers in the new era, implementing the education policy, attaching importance to moral education, and embodying Chinese characteristics. As the supporting unit of Tsinghua University’s national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base, the Training Center adheres to the construction concept of “integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education and engineering practice education” and builds an interdisciplinary maker education platform supported by cutting-edge industrial technologies through the construction path of “artificial intelligence + manufacturing + Internet + maker space.” The training center will further play a demonstration and radiation role and make more contributions to the cultivation of innovative talents in the new era. Zhang Qi, the deputy director of the double-creation teaching department of the training center, introduced the competition situation of the second “Tsinghua Craftsman” Competition.

In the New Era Maker Education Forum, Ma Yanjun, the general manager of Baidu AI Technology Ecology, Hong Hua, the founder of the Guchang New Chinese Brand Research Institute and the founder of the Guchang Intelligent Hardware Incubator, Lin Weiran, the assistant director of the Tsinghua University Fundamental Industrial Training Center, and Gregory L. Stoller, a professor at Boston University, respectively discussed and exchanged ideas on topics such as cultivating artificial intelligence innovative talents through industry-education integration, user-centered low-cost innovation, briefly discussing the improvement of the innovation ability of female college students, and international entrepreneurial trends.

During the event, Lin Tengyu, CEO and co-founder of Hongrun Qingyuan, Li Mingxuan, person in charge of the Qingchu Future team and the winner of the special prize in the first “Tsinghua Craftsman” Competition, and Li Peiyang, the CTO of Beijing Davinci Motor Technology Co., Ltd., respectively told their maker paths in combination with their respective scientific and technological innovation projects. Liu Songming (an undergraduate student of Grade 2019 of the Department of Computer Science), the winner of the Tsinghua University Undergraduate Special Scholarship in 2022, shared his experience of closely combining innovative thinking with learning and scientific research. Ding Xigong, a student of Yunnan Agricultural University, shared his insights and experiences of participating in agricultural innovation projects around agriculture in the new era.

The 2022 Tsinghua Maker Day series of activities, with the theme of “Gathering Forces for Creation, Building Momentum for Innovation,” included three forums: the New Era Maker Education Forum, the New Era Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Development Forum, and the 8th Advanced Symposium on Engineering Cultural Quality Education; two exhibitions: the 2022 Tsinghua Industry-Education Integration Enterprise Exhibition and the 2022 Tsinghua Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Achievement Exhibition; and a series of activities such as the preliminary round of the first Tsinghua Medical-Engineering Integration Competition, the Metaverse Theme Salon, the 4th SDG Open Innovation Marathon Challenge, the International Exchange Workshop on Innovative Learning Experience Design, and the Open Activity of the Versatile Spinning Top. The participating teachers, students, and guests shared the latest teaching and research achievements in the activities and further explored the cultivation model of top-notch innovative talents in the new era.
