Material Processing Lab

Material Processing Laboratory (formerly known as Thermal Processing Lab) was established in 2015. It is an important part of Metal Technology Laboratory, a tier 1 laboratory of Tsinghua University, which is now affiliated to the Fundamental Industry Training Center.

1. Positioning of Functions

Material Processing Laboratory is an important part of the Engineering Practice Education Base and Innovation and the Entrepreneurial Education Base of Fundamental Industry Training Center. This Lab aims to implement engineering practical teaching as well as innovative and entrepreneurial education of undergraduates for material processing technology. It also conducts the scientific research on technical issues in material processing as well as serves for practical work in material processing and the various technology contests among students.
Targeting material processing technology, the lab serves to teach undergraduate students practical engineering skills and to deliver innovation and entrepreneurial education, supports various scientific and technical studies in material processing, provides technical service and supports students’ technical skill contests.

2. Laboratory Components

Covering an area of 1,380 square meters, the laboratory has 240 sets of instruments and equipment including 6 large-scale instrument sets, each costing over RMB 300,000. The total value of the equipment is in excess of RMB 10 million.

The Material Processing Laboratory has 8 training rooms, for casting, forging and pressing, welding, arc welding robot, material preparation, material structure analysis, heat treatment and 3D printing. Depending on the specialized areas, the laboratory has developed multi-level, modular, project-based and comprehensive practical teaching sessions to explore the applications of new technologies, new techniques and new teaching models in engineering training, engineering culture, innovative and entrepreneurial education and so on.

3. Laboratory Team

There are a total of 17 staff members working in the laboratory including 1 associate professor, 1 senior engineer, 1 engineer, 2 technicians, and 12 other technical workers.

4. Teaching Tasks

The laboratory undertakes the experiments prescribed by 8 courses, including National Resource-Sharing Courses: Mechanical Manufacturing Practice and Laboratory Scientific Research and Exploration, 1 National High-quality Course: Materials Processing, Cultural Quality Core Courses: Manufacturing Engineering Experience, Manufacturing Engineering Practice, Fundamentals of Industrial System, Modern Processing Technology, and Special Processing. The laboratory trains nearly 2,000 people annually. It also teaches experiments prescribed by certain experimental courses of the School of Mechanical Engineering.

Currently, following the mid-to-long-term development plan of the Fundamental Industry Training Center and taking advantages of the laboratory’s featured cross-innovation and system integration, the Material Processing Laboratory strives to achieve breakthroughs in engineering practical training and innovative and entrepreneurial education and contributes to the nurturing of quality versatile talents.

5. Achievements

More than 30 papers on teaching and research have been published since 2010 and 5 national invention patents have been authorized since 2000. The laboratory won the Second Prize of Teaching Achievement Award of Tsinghua University in 2000, the Second Prize of Experimental Technology Achievement Award of Tsinghua University in 2006, the First Prize of Teaching Achievement Award of Tsinghua University in 2008, and the Second Prize of Education and Teaching Achievement Award of Tsinghua University in 2016.
