On May 23, students from the Fundamental Industry Training Center courses "Manufacturing Engineering Experience" "Handcraft Innovation Practice", and "Manufacturing Engineering Practice" visited the Creative Labor Education and Culture Exhibition held at the Training Center, where they were guided by TAs/PhD candidates. This exhibition was planned and sponsored by the Training Center and will be open to the public during Tsinghua University's 111th Anniversary celebrations and Labor Education Month.

Guided by General Secretary Xi Jinping's views on labor, the exhibition features the following parts: "The History of Creative Labor", "The Road of Labor Education and Engineering Practice", "The Importance of a Complete Discipline System for Labor Education", "The History of Creative Labor at the Training Center", "Traditional Culture and Creative Labor", and "New Educational Philosophy". It aims to create a culture of creative labor, help give students the ambition to build a manufacturing superpower, shape the values of creative labor, teach students about modern manufacturing and engineering, and cultivate engineering capabilities and an engineering mindset.
General Secretary Xi Jinping's Views on Labor
At the 2018 National Education Conference, General Secretary Xi Jinping said, "It is necessary to promote the spirit of labor among students, educate and guide students to advocate and respect labor, understand the glorious, noble, powerful, and beautiful truth of labor, and allow them to work hard, honestly, and creatively when they grow up." In addition, the report of the 19th Party Congress pointed out that it is necessary to "build a knowledgeable, skilled, and creative workforce, carry forward the spirit of model workers and craftsmanship traditions, and create a social fashion out of respect for labor and nurture a professional atmosphere in pursuit of excellence."
The Training Center has actively responded to the call of the country and the university. It is exploring what labor really means, developing an integrated set of ideas, enhancing its labor curriculum system development, and tapping into labor education resources in order to set a benchmark for creative labor education at Tsinghua University.
The Road to Modernization: Industry in the Service of the Country
In "The History of Creative Labor" part, the exhibition shows how people from Tsinghua worked to remove social, economic, and cultural barriers that hindered the development of an industrial civilization through videos, pictures, text, and physical objects.
Major Engineering Projects Involving Tsinghua University
In "The Road of Labor Education and Engineering Practice" part, the exhibition describes the approach of engineering practice in labor education and vividly displays the major engineering projects involving Tsinghua in the form of a map. In the process of building engineering capabilities, Tsinghua scholars provided strong support for engineering education at the university and made important contributions to the culture of innovation at Tsinghua.
A Ballista, Guitar, and Dougong (Bucket Arch) Made by Students
The exhibition also showcases objects like a ballista, a guitar, and a dougong (bucket arch) handcrafted by students in the Training Center's "Manufacturing Engineering Experience" course. These objects reflect the interdisciplinary crosscurrents between the humanities, arts, and engineering.
Arts, Literature, Physical Education, and Engineering Education
In the "The Dialectical Relationship between a Complete Discipline System and Labor Education" part, the exhibition highlights the complementarity between different disciplines. Science lays the foundation for engineering, economics and law enrich the significance of engineering, and art, literature, and physical education permeate engineering education. Tsinghua's complete discipline system provides engaging labor education content that aims to develop a correct view on labor, cultivate skilled workforce, develop good labor habits, and promote the powerful spirit of labor.
The Training Center's 100-year History
"The History of Creative Labor Education at the Training Center" part traces the development of creative labor education at the Training Center through a combination of interactive multimedia and graphic displays. Oriented toward the future, Tsinghua University cultivates students with a broad range of skills through a combination of theoretical teaching and engineering practice. Upon graduation, our students are ready to go on to blaze the trail to the future. In this process, the Training Center has become a frontier post and a platform for practice-based teaching. Along the way, the sweat and hard work of its staff have yielded exceptional results.
New Educational Philosophy
The "New Educational Philosophy" part presents New Educational Philosophy and new paradigms in creative labor education. Labor education will consolidate engineering culture and practice the three-in-one education philosophy of forming values, developing capabilities, and sharing knowledge.
The Creative Labor Education and Culture Exhibition at the Training Center is planned to run from April 2021. It is also a key project of the university's Cultural Development Office for 2021. The exhibition aims to provide a complete display of Tsinghua University's achievements in labor education, carry on our craftsmanship traditions, develop a correct view on labor, cultivate labor literacy, create a culture of creative labor, guide students to participate in creative labor, and achieve broader and deeper adoption and sharing of labor culture.
