The Digital Manufacturing Laboratory was established in 2015 and is currently affiliated to the Fundamental Industrial Training Center of Tsinghua University.
1. Positioning of Functions
The Digital Manufacturing Laboratory primarily carries out experimental teaching in advanced processing technology and in digital and intelligent manufacturing systems, as well as construction work of the laboratory.
The experimental units currently in place include: CNC Lathe, CNC Milling, CNC Electrical Discharge Wire Cutting, Industrial Robot Simulation and Operation, Flexible Manufacturing System, Precision Measurement System and so on.
The hardware and software systems currently in place include CNC Lathe, CNC Precision Engraving and Milling Center, CNC Wire Cutting, CNC Laser Cutting Machine, Industrial Robot and other experimental equipment as well as PLM Series Industrial Software, Factory Simulation, Robot Simulation and other technical software.
2. Laboratory Components
The Digital Manufacturing Laboratory takes up an area of about 1,000 square meters and has seven different practical training rooms.
3. Laboratory Team
The Laboratory team consists of 9 lab technicians including 1 with a doctoral degree and 2 with master’s degrees. There are 3 senior engineers (senior lecturers), 1 senior technician and 5 other technical team members.

4. Teaching Tasks
Each year, the laboratory undertakes experiment part in 7 courses including National Resource-Sharing courses Mechanical Manufacturing Practice and Examinations of Science and Research in Laboratory and several other core courses for improving cultural-quality including Manufacturing Engineering Practical Experience, Manufacturing Engineering Practice, Industrial System Foundation, Modern Processing Technology, Special Processing etc. Furthermore, nearly 2,000 individuals carry out experiments at the lab each year. The Laboratory also undertakes experimental teaching tasks required by certain experimental teaching courses of the School of Mechanical Engineering.
5. Achievements
30 papers on educational reforms and academic research have been published;
One project won the Experimental Technology Achievement Award of Tsinghua University;
One project won the 1st prize and 3 projects won the 2nd prize in national-level competitions;
The Laboratory also has extensive cooperation with enterprises and receives nearly RMB 10 million in donation from a various enterprises.
Over the years, the Digital Manufacturing Laboratory has strengthened its cooperation with various enterprises and has entered into arrangements of cooperation with numerous enterprises, both domestically and internationally in teaching practice, receiving donation worth of nearly RMB 10 million.
The Laboratory has published more than 30 papers on educational reform and academic research, has 1 project awarded the Experimental Technology Achievement Award of Tsinghua University and has made exceptional contribution to the construction of the National-level Virtual Simulation Teaching Demonstration Center at the Fundamental Industrial Training Center.
