The Meeting for the Report on "Labor Curriculum Design and Practice in University Training Programs" Was Held as Part of the 26th Educational Work Symposium

On June 23, the online meeting for the report on "Labor Curriculum Design and Practice in University Training Programs" was held as part of the 26th Educational Work Symposium. This meeting was jointly organized by the Fundamental Industry Training Center and the Office of Academic Affairs. It focused on the topics of the university's 26th Educational Work Symposium and included in-depth discussions and exchanges on the theme "Allowing the Main Channel of Curriculum Education to Play its Due Role in Labor Education". The people responsible for on-campus labor courses, the full teaching staff of the Training Center, and nearly 200 members of the Virtual Teaching and Research Office for the Education of Engineering Makers representing more than 100 university-level engineering training centers across the country participated in this symposium.

Liu Pei Giving a Speech

Liu Pei, Deputy Director of Tsinghua's Office of Academic Affairs gave a talk on the current status of labor education for Tsinghua students. In it, he discussed the context, significance, and requirements of labor education, the tradition of labor education at Tsinghua University, and current status of labor education. He said that labor education plays an important role in the undergraduate stage and holds an important position in training systems. Labor education should be integrated into various courses and teaching stages to cultivate students' labor awareness and abilities in the process. At present, Tsinghua University has offered 185 compulsory courses related to labor education at the undergraduate level, covering 41 departments throughout the university. At the same time, the university provides mandatory practice-based labor education courses for PhD students and has created the labor education brand program "Tsinghua Postgrads Love Labor". This program conducted a series of activities for postgraduate dormitory sanitation and design. and laboratory and workstation cleanup. It also organized postgraduates to assist in the on-campus vaccine booster shot initiative.

Gu Jianjun and Zhu Huabing Giving Keynote Speeches

Gu Jianjun, a Professor at the School of Educational Sciences of Nanjing Normal University and Head of the Compulsory Education Labor Curriculum Standards Group of the Ministry of Education (MOE), explained the compulsory education labor curriculum standards in a speech titled "Focusing on Labor Education and Building a Labor Curriculum". Gu Jianjun explained that the curriculum standards are based on national documents, take education as the fundamental task, take literacy as the guiding principle, use task groups as the basic unit, and view development as the core principle, understanding as the key area, and utility as the standard of judgment. In so doing, a nine-year integrated labor curriculum system is put in place, which condenses the elements of labor literacy to be cultivated in labor courses. A vertically ordered and horizontally integrated target system comes into being and a content structure is built, which combines a strong foundation with an open format. The labor literacy requirements are developed for students at each academic level. A variety of labor curriculum practice methods are strengthened. Actionable requirements and suggestions for curriculum implementation are proposed. Gu Jianjun suggested that curriculum standards should pay more attention to the current mission and educational attributes of labor education. We should strengthen the overall design of practice-based labor projects to better adapt them to the real world. We need to effectively plan the university's labor curriculum, focus on the key points and difficulties of the current labor curriculum based on scientific principles, and properly handle internal and external labor course relations. He said we need to build a collaborative implementation system that brings together universities, families, and labor courses in order to have a thorough, perfect, up-to-date and lasting labor curriculum that truly works.

Zhu Huabing, a Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering of Hefei University of Technology and Deputy Director of the Engineering Training and Teaching Steering Committee of the MOE, used Hefei University of Technology as an example to discuss practice-based explorations of labor education by the university's engineering training center. Hefei University of Technology has built on-campus and off-campus labor bases. Viewing practicality, innovation, safety, and moral values as the basic principles of labor education evaluation, it has developed an indicator system for labor education evaluation based on labor knowledge, labor skills, and work ethics. Zhu Huabing said that "creative labor" is the core feature of university labor education, which sets itself apart from labor education at the elementary education stage. In the new era, the significance of labor education should adapt to scientific and technological development and industrial changes. Faced with new forms of labor and focusing on supporting emerging technology and new changes in social services, we must deepen the integration of industry and education, improve labor education methods, and improve creative labor capabilities.

Li Shuangshou Presiding over the Symposium

Li Shuangshou, Director of the Fundamental Industry Training Center, presided over the symposium and gave his remarks. He said that labor education should inspire, promote, and guide students to love labor, recognize their identity as laborers, and create labor value. He added that, in the creation of practical courses, a deeper dive into the meaning and value of labor education should be done. We should work together to strengthen learning, raise awareness, build consensus, summarize experience, and form universal ideas. This will allow us to successfully translate labor education into concrete actions. Li Shuangshou stated that we will further summarize and condense the valuable experience shared by the teachers during the symposium, continue to promote curriculum development, and better integrate labor education into the student training system.
