From November 25 to 26, 2023, the Tsinghua Maker Day activities were held at the Lee Shau Kee Science and Technology Building of Tsinghua University. Representatives from award-winning Tsinghua teams in various science and technology innovation competitions, faculty and students from Tsinghua’s innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship platforms and student associations, scholars from universities both domestic and abroad, as well as renowned makers and maker educators from various sectors of society participated in the event. The opening ceremony was hosted by Yang Jianxin, deputy director of the Fundamental Industry Training Center.

The launch of the Third “Tsinghua Artisan” Competition

At the opening ceremony, Liu Pei, deputy director of the Academic Affairs Office and coordinator of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, Huang Feng, deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee, alumni representatives of the class of 1986 including Guan Tiechui, Li Dong, and Liu Lin, and Wang Jianmei, deputy director of the Training Center, jointly launched the Third “Tsinghua Artisan” competition.

At the opening ceremony, the appointment ceremony of innovation and entrepreneurship tutors for the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base, the release ceremony of the iWorks Innovative Talent Training Program, the release of the case collection of the art and technology integration project and the award ceremony of the Art and Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the award ceremony of the first “Artisan Maker Cup” Cultural and Creative Competition were also held simultaneously.

Huang Feng delivered a speech for the tenth anniversary of the Maker Club. He said that the Maker Club adheres to the spirit of “creating everything with hands, everyone can be a Maker,” focuses on entrepreneurship cultivation and project incubation, and has cultivated many outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship projects and a series of high-level student scientific and technological innovation teams. Zhou Jin, minister of the Double Innovation Teaching Department of the Tsinghua University Basic Industrial Training Center, released the research report on the competency of college students in innovation and entrepreneurship in the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base of Tsinghua University. Currently, the on-campus entrepreneurial students cover 19 departments, with 53% being undergraduates, 25% being master students, and 22% being doctoral students; 34.6% of the student projects have already launched financing plans.

At the International Maker Education Forum, professor Gao Xudong from the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, general manager Zhang Feng of Zhongguancun Software Park Investment Management Co., Ltd., and associate professor Luo Jianxi of Design and Artificial Intelligence at the Singapore University of Technology and Design respectively discussed and exchanged ideas on topics such as the understanding of “innovation-based entrepreneurship,” the practice of Zhongguancun’s scientific and technological innovation ecosystem construction, and the future of design innovation.

Wang Zhiquan, a doctoral student at Tsinghua and CEO of Qinghao Puzhong, and Shen Liang, the winner of the 2022 Tsinghua University Undergraduate Special Scholarship and CEO of Qingneng Future, demonstrated their Tsinghua Maker paths by telling about the scientific and technological innovation projects incubated by Tsinghua. Shi Xuennian, who graduated from Guizhou Normal College and established the first college student team to promote rural sports development, shared his entrepreneurial journey explored from basketball. Wang Yuchen, who once won the title of the national “Most Beautiful College Student,” shared his insights and experiences of the polar observation and protection project through his participation in the Chinese Antarctic scientific expedition.

2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Tsinghua Maker Day. The series of activities, with the theme of “Maker Decade, Moving Forward with Innovation,” include five educational forums and seminars such as the International Maker Education Forum, the High-Quality Development Forum of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, the Ninth Advanced Seminar on Engineering Cultural Quality Education, the City Changers · New Space Economy Forum: Moving to Mars in 2033, and the Project Completion Review Meeting of the China University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Fund, five works and achievement exhibitions such as the 2023 Tsinghua Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Achievement Exhibition and the Industry-Education Integration Enterprise Exhibition, the Achievement Exhibition of the Third Tsinghua Artisan Competition (Summer Internship Track), the First “Artisan Maker Cup” Cultural and Creative Competition and Exhibition, the Course Report Exhibition of the “Engineering Literacy and Humanistic Practice” course of the Rixin Academy, and the Achievement Exhibition of the “X Museum,” as well as innovation and entrepreneurship competitions and activities such as the 24th Wenzhiwugong College Student Humanities Knowledge Competition of Tsinghua University, the Preliminary of the Second Tsinghua Medical-Engineering Integration Innovation Competition, the Third Beijing and Seventh Tsinghua 3D Printing Competition, the Fifth SDG Open Innovation Marathon Challenge, and the iCenter Open Experience Activity.
