The Award Ceremony of the Excellent Craftsmanship Award in the Summer Internship Track of the Second “Tsinghua Craftsman Competition” was Held

On October 29th, the award ceremony of the Excellent Craftsmanship Award in the Craftsman Inheritance - Summer Internship Track of the second “Tsinghua Craftsman Competition” of Grade 1986 (Class of 1991) Alumni Reward Fund of Tsinghua University (referred to as the “Competition”) was held in the Lee Shau Kee Science and Technology Building.

Speeches by Li Shuangshou (left) and Yang Jianxin

Li Shuangshou, director of the Fundamental Industrial Training Center, said that the competition adopts the “integration of curriculum and competition”, combining the competition with the engineering practice and innovation curriculum, promoting teaching, learning, and innovation through the competition. At the same time, the curriculum is project and result-oriented, helping students practice the craftsman spirit of dedication, refinement, concentration, and innovation in practice. This year, the competition has been written into the “Implementation Plan of Labor Education in Tsinghua University.” As a comprehensive competition supported by the school’s labor education, the competition has become a platform for the school to popularize and train productive labor skills such as manufacturing technology. In the future, the competition will be open to more academies, colleges, and practical teaching centers, allowing more teachers and students to participate and further creating a labor atmosphere at Tsinghua.

Yang Jianxin, deputy director of the Training Center, introduced the specific situation of the competition and the summer internship curriculum and announced the selection results of this summer internship track. The awards obtained by the students this time are the Excellent Craftsmanship Awards in the Craftsman Inheritance - Summer Internship Track. Four courses, including “Metalworking Practice”, “Electronic Process Practice, “Weiyang Academy - Flywheel Energy Storage Project,” and “Rixin Academy - Engineering Literacy and Humanities Practice Course,” participated in the selection, and a total of 77 excellent works by 75 students won awards. The on-site guests presented the award certificates to the winning students.

Wang Zhongchen, dean of Rixin College, mentioned that the students of Rixin have learned about engineering and manufacturing and industrial design in the new era through the platform of the Training Center. He hoped that the winning students could further introduce their learning experiences to other students in the academy and demystify “hands-on design and production.” Li Zhengcao, the deputy dean of Weiyang Academy, mentioned that the competition deeply interprets Tsinghua’s “trinity” education concept, more fully shows the charm of “full-staff, full-process, and all-round education,” reflects the characteristics of Tsinghua’s inquiry-based and experiential learning, helps students give play to their subjective initiative in creation, and helps cultivate future innovative leading talents. Wang Zhanshuo, the deputy secretary of the school Youth League Committee, said that the competition has further enriched the school's student scientific and technological innovation system in terms of educational connotation, model innovation exploration, and spirit inheritance. It contains the spiritual connotation of Tsinghua people’s self-improvement and social commitment and carries the care and support of all Grade 1986 alumni for Tsinghua students. Tao Limin, the representative of the Grade 1986 alumni, combined the “Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST)” project and the experience of the Tsinghua Department of Engineering Physics team to tell the craftsman spirit of Tsinghua people. He hoped that the students could adhere to curiosity and imagination and pursue their favorite careers persistently.

The winning student representatives shared their gains and feelings during the summer internship. Zhan Boxiao, a Grade 2020 undergraduate student of Weiyang College, participated in two courses, “Metalworking Practice” and “Electrical Engineering Practice,” online this summer. She said that the teachers designed the course content according to the actual situation and mailed materials and tools. Combined with the real-time help and guidance during class, the students could experience all the operation projects as much as possible even at home. While gaining knowledge and skills, they also deepened their understanding of the craftsman spirit. Wang Yihuan, a Grade 2020 undergraduate student of Weiyang College, mentioned that in the learning process, they could truly experience the craftsman spirit of rigor and excellence and would strive forward, practice innovation in future life, and work hard to promote the construction of a powerful country in China. Zhang Linyue, a Grade 2020 undergraduate student of Rixin College, said that when participating in the “Engineering Literacy and Humanities Practice” course, they personally made folding fans, fan pendants, and tripods, deeply experiencing the influence of the craftsman spirit in promoting the process of human historical civilization and deepening their understanding of the inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage skills in today’s era. Wan Qi, a Grade 2020 undergraduate student of Weiyang College, mentioned that in the “Weiyang College - Flywheel Energy Storage Project,” they effectively improved their practical ability, deepened their understanding of the concept of labor, and improved their engineering literacy.

Part of the winning works

The “Tsinghua Craftsman Competition” of Grade 1986 Alumni Reward Fund of Tsinghua University is a school-wide selection activity of engineering practice and innovation education achievements and talents carried out with the support of donations from Grade 1986 alumni. The competition is hosted by the Fundamental Industrial Training Center and is held once a year, setting up the Craftsman Inheritance Track and the Exploration and Innovation Track. The competition carries out engineering practice and innovation teaching, competitions, talent cultivation, and selection around themes such as national development, industrial progress, technological innovation, and social well-being. In line with the school’s high-level talent cultivation plan and goals, the concepts and requirements of labor education and innovation and entrepreneurship education, and the needs of academy practical teaching reform, it organizes supporting brand activities such as salons, workshops, and training camps, as well as award ceremonies and achievement exhibitions of relevant tracks. The first competition was successfully concluded on this year’s school anniversary day, and the competition selected a batch of excellent student works with both diverse forms, academic depth, and application breadth.
