The 6th Tsinghua-Peking University Friendly Low-carbon Campus Design Competition Held
On December 28, 2024, the 6th "Tsinghua-Peking University Low-Carbon Campus Design Friendly Competition" took place at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Peking University. Serving as an achievement exchange platform, it brought together the outcomes of Handmade Innovation Practice course from Tsinghua and Sustainable Campus Practice, Green Campus Scientific Practice, and Industrial Ecology courses from PKU.

The competition event
During the competition, three representative teams from Tsinghua University and three from PKU took the stage to share their research results. Their works included Meow GARDEN (a pet-friendly home garden), Flowery Shade & Flowing Light Cover (an innovative approach to tomato cultivation), Wonderland in the Dorm (a desktop micro-garden that recreates a natural retreat), Campus Low-Carbon Platform (a collective action hub for low-carbon efforts), Rebirth of Old Things (dormitory upcycling initiatives), and Food-Saving Magic Bag (a creative solution to cut down on food waste). Other projects were featured in a vibrant low-carbon goods market, where interactive experience activities added to the engagement—visitors could try their hand at making plant-based lip balm, handmade soap, enzymes, and fertilizer cakes. Wandering through the exhibition, attendees admired the students’ clever ideas for low-carbon living and joined in envisioning a greener, more sustainable future.
This semester, the courses have actively aligned with the key construction tasks outlined in the “Beijing Garden City Plan (2023-2035)”. Tsinghua University’s Handmade Innovation Practice course centers on home gardening, guiding students to explore a wide range of topics, from basic gardening skills, spatial design, to cutting-edge technologies and the aesthetics of daily life. Students are encouraged to think critically, engage in hands-on practice, and pursue innovation, ultimately turning their ideas into tangible learning outcomes.
