Inherit craftsman spirit and promote maker culture

The Fundamental Industry Training Center where Tsinghua iCenter affiliates, originated from the workshop classroom of civil engineering in 1922. In the last hundred years, it has been the most important engineering practice education base in the school. It has recorded the first practice of the innumerable Tsinghua students and guided them to explore the mysteries outside the books. Today, it is more a maker space to support the innovation and entrepreneurship of the students, and to practice the theory of “value shaping, ability training, knowledge imparting”.
Located in the Lee Shau Kee Science and Technology Building, currently the world’s largest campus maker space, iCenter creates the whole process of “thinking” to “implementation” ecosystem. Inherit the craftsman spirit, and promote the maker culture. The world-class engineering practice and innovative education base is here to greet the arrival of new students. I, taking students as the main body, has unlimited possibilities waiting for makers to discover.
Industry
According to the new requirements of Smart Manufacturing 2025 plan in China, iCenter builds the digital capability development center, the basic industry cloud platform, the carbon material innovation center and so on. It takes the actual industrial product as the guidance, and realizes the promotion from the technical thinking to the system level.
And this needs more customized education system to support. The training of engineering practice ability has always been the core of iCenter education philosophy. The complete facilities, professional tutorship and dozens of engineering practice courses have realized the full coverage of undergraduate students, and let more students from different majors, such as arts, science and engineering, experience advanced manufacturing resources and innovative teaching system.
Inter-discipline
In 2007, the training center integrated more than 100 scientific research laboratories in various departments of the university, pioneered the course Laboratory Research and Exploration, and transformed the advantages of the university scientific research into the advantages of teaching resources, which played an important role in stimulating the interest of academic research and guiding the development of academic career.
In 2015, combined with the School of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Information, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Fine Arts, and the Institute of Economics and Management, iCenter has set up three technical innovation and entrepreneurship minors in directions of intelligent hardware, robot and intelligent transportation. It carries out innovative and entrepreneurial teaching of interdisciplinary, project oriented and team cooperation. The new way of training the talents of the industry.
Incubation
In order to promote the general knowledge of innovation and entrepreneurship education, the course of “entrepreneurial guidance and entrepreneurs face-to-face” is set up, and many entrepreneurs, such as Yu Minhong and Wang Xiaochuan, are invited to teach students, and they have extensive influence in the undergraduate students. In addition, iCenter has also set up a number of challenging learning Demonstration Courses to promote the development of the XLP teaching concept in the extreme learning process, and support the students to carry out innovative practice activities such as research learning, entrepreneurship program and entrepreneurial simulation.
Innovation
Since 2013, iCenter has served more than 10000 students have been involved in innovation projects and activities, and developped many student clubs in the same time.
Many teams have moved from here to a bigger stage. New generation of electric vehicle transmission project from Feng Chuan dynamic science and technology won the first prize for the BRICS Five Nation Creation Competition Award. Zhao Ye from CoClean Technology were appraised by Forbes “30 young entrepreneurs under 30”. Phantom Technology was awarded China’s top 10 innovative startups by Fast Company.
International
While serving Tsinghua students, iCenter also held a series of influential domestic and international events, such as the Chinese and American youth maker competition, the international maker and education forum, and the Tsinghua Makers Day, which attracted the participation of the representative figures from all over the world. The establishment of an inter-disciplinary and cross institutional Alliance for creating a Education Alliance has attracted the participation of engineering training center of nearly 100 institutions and companies.
